I’ve said this in countless branding talks and workshops: The knot in your throat that forms when your social media post gets zero likes? It has NOTHING to do with your ability to get customers.

I recently wrote an article for Bluff City Magazine breaking down why chasing followers and chasing customers require completely different strategies. And let me tell you – it takes guts to choose the path that builds real customer relationships over viral moments.
The thing is this: When you’re specific about who you serve, you might get fewer likes. Those numbers might drop. And that feels scary. But sometimes fewer likes means you’re doing something right – because you’re speaking directly to YOUR people instead of trying to please everyone.
Building a business requires different moves than building a following. Now, I’m a big proponent of operating with a “multiple things can be true at once” mindset. So even though a customer quest looks different from a follower quest, you have three paths you can choose in business:
- Option 1 – You can focus on getting clients, contracts, customers, wholesale opportunities and more, or
- Option 2 – You can focus on growing your follower count, or
- Option 3 – You can find a balance of working on both Option 1 and 2 at the same time.
This isn’t about choosing customers OR followers. And I’m not the brand strategist who would try to make you choose.
However…
You need to know what will happen when you work on sealing deals vs. growing brand awareness.
In my article on Bluff City magazine, I break down:
- The real difference between activities that make money now vs. later
- Why some influencers with massive followings can’t make a sale
- How to balance immediate cash flow with long-term growth
- My “Money-Making Monday” strategy that puts profit first

Are you focusing more on growing followers or growing customers right now? Be honest – is that aligned with what your bank account actually needs?
